Understand lock grades
ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 and Grade 2 deadbolts are built for heavier use and resistance. Grade 3 hardware is common in builder-grade homes and is worth upgrading on exterior doors.
Reinforce the strike plate
Most forced entries break the frame, not the lock. A reinforced strike plate with long screws anchored into the wall stud adds significant resistance.
Single or double cylinder
Single-cylinder deadbolts with an interior thumb-turn are standard and safer for emergency exit. Discuss glass-panel doors with your locksmith before choosing.
Professional installation matters
Proper bore alignment and a bolt that throws fully into the strike are what make a deadbolt work. Misaligned bolts wear quickly and may not fully lock.
