What a restricted keyway is
Restricted key blanks are only supplied to authorized locksmiths, and copies are cut against a record of approved signatures. Staff cannot walk into a key-cutting kiosk and duplicate a key, so the number of keys in circulation stays under your control.
When high-security cylinders are worth it
High-security cylinders add resistance to picking, bumping, and drilling. They are a strong fit for exterior doors, cash rooms, server and records rooms, pharmacies, and any space with inventory or confidential information.
Retrofitting existing hardware
In many cases, existing commercial locks can accept a new restricted or high-security cylinder, so you keep the lock body and only replace the cylinder. That keeps cost down and limits disruption to the business.
Pair with a master key plan
Restricted cylinders work best as part of a master key system: managers carry one key, staff carry keys only for their areas, and every key is tracked. When someone leaves, only the affected cylinders need attention.
Questions to ask before you buy
Ask who controls the key records, what the process is to order more keys, whether cylinders can be rekeyed on site, and whether the system can expand as you add doors or locations.
